But what does this mean in concrete terms? The <strong>decision of the<\/strong> Federal Joint Committee ( <strong>GBA<\/strong> ) <strong>on<\/strong> <strong>July 17, 2025<\/strong>, according to which health insurance companies could soon cover lipoedema surgery as a health insurance benefit under certain conditions, initially caused great joy among all those affected &#8211; a very important step for us too, as we have been doing educational work as a specialized clinic for lipoedema for over 10 years. However, a closer look at the conditions for such cost coverage triggers numerous questions, which we would like to clarify for you below.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fb57636 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fb57636\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" id=\"3\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">These requirements must be met for the health insurance company to cover the costs<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5687f69 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5687f69\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In order for liposuction to be covered by health insurance, several conditions apply:<\/p><ul><li>The <strong>BMI<\/strong> should be <strong>below 32<\/strong>. On closer inspection, however, the reality is much more complex: <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d4637d9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d4637d9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Limited choice of diagnosticians<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a1b4554 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a1b4554\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The <strong>limited choice of specialists<\/strong> who are allowed to make a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lipo.clinic\/en\/lipedema-diagnosis\/\">lipoedema diagnosis<\/a> recognized by the health insurance funds is a major challenge. How long did you wait for your diagnosis or the long-awaited appointment with a specialist? It is not uncommon for the diagnosis to fail due to the doctors&#8217; lack of knowledge and for lipoedema not to be correctly diagnosed for years. In addition to the lack of knowledge, you can also expect long waiting times, as the group of diagnosticians in Germany is very small. This problem also affects women who have already received a lipoedema diagnosis from a private doctor. This does not count towards health insurance coverage, so a new diagnosis by one of the licensed specialists is necessary. This further delays the already long journey to a pain-free life.      <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6ec8bd5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6ec8bd5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The dual control principle<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-528042f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"528042f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>But this is not the end of the bureaucratic process. According to the so-called <strong>four-eyes principle<\/strong>, in addition to the diagnosis by a licensed doctor, <strong>the surgeon<\/strong> must also <strong>provide an indication<\/strong>, i.e. the official justification for the procedure. Both steps must be carried out at least six months apart, during which conservative therapy (compression, exercise, lymphatic drainage) must be continued. In addition, there must be no weight gain during this time &#8211; otherwise there is a risk of loss of approval for cost coverage by the insurance company.   <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e18cca9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e18cca9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Licensing requirement for operators<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ee7a020 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ee7a020\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Not every doctor is allowed to operate on lipoedema at health insurance costs. Those who have already performed liposuctions in the past must provide evidence of <strong>at least 50 operations<\/strong>. New surgeons <strong>only<\/strong> need <strong>20 operations within two years<\/strong>.  <\/p><p>Liposuction for lipoedema differs fundamentally from aesthetic procedures in terms of technique and objectives. <strong>Expertise and routine are crucial<\/strong> for a safe and lasting result &#8211; especially with this complex disease.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4ee89a4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4ee89a4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Waiting times and limited capacities<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eed87b7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eed87b7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Realistically, only a small proportion of affected patients will benefit from liposuction as a statutory health insurance benefit. In Germany, it is estimated that <strong>around 2.6 million women<\/strong> are affected by lipoedema. At the same time, there are probably <strong>only around 50 clinics<\/strong> that are allowed to offer this operation at health insurance costs.
