The day of your surgery
in the LipoClinic

So that you have a general idea of what to expect on the day of your surgery in the LipoClinic, we have outlined what happens on a typical day. Please note that the details of how the day proceeds may vary between patients.

Check-in: We will let you know in advance what time you should check in on the day of surgery and will be ready to welcome you to the LipoClinic in MĂĽlheim an der Ruhr or Hamburg. First, you will complete your admission documents and then we will take you to your room, which has already been prepared for your overnight stay. Your room (usually a double room) will have a bed and a surgical gown on each bed, a night table and a lockable cupboard along with a refrigerator with drinks, a washbasin with a mirror and a television (including Netflix).

Talk with the anaesthetist: After you have settled in your room, you will have a detailed discussion with your anaesthetist. This is specific for you and is conducted by the anaesthetist in person. You will then be given an intravenous access so that you can receive the anaesthetic and other medications you will need during surgery.

Pre-operative discussion: You will then meet your surgeon again. The surgical area is marked and photographed. You will have another opportunity to ask any questions you may have. We are also happy to accept your music requests (if the surgery will be conducted under twilight sedation).

The operation: Once all formalities are complete, our nursing personnel will take you to the operating theatre. If you like, you can take your mobile phone with you. Many patients have long been yearning for their liposuction and would like to capture this moment with a photograph – our nursing personnel will happily do this for you.

In the operating theatre you are weighed and your surgical area is disinfected. We then place you on the operating table and cover you. The anaesthetist gives you the medications and you will slip into a light twilight sedation (you can also choose to have a general anaesthetic). After the surgery, the nursing personnel will put on your flat-knit compression garment and take you back to your room where a pre-warmed bed is waiting for you.

Recovery time: Now you can lie back and rest fully – our nursing personnel will take care good of you. As soon as you feel fit, we will bring you something to eat so that you can regain your strength. You can also take your first steps in the hallway and get your heart going.

The next morning after breakfast you will have a check-up. Shortly after, a loved one can meet you in reception for the journey home.

The time after
the lipedema operation

Together with the LipoClinic, you have braved the first step towards a new life and your surgery has been successful. Now there are a few points that you need to pay attention to:

The healing and reconstruction processes in the area operated on are most intense in the first few weeks and months. For this reason, abnormal sensations, hardening and swelling may develop in this time. The healing process takes up to one year and in some cases even longer. Your lymphatic system, nervous system and the entire tissue in the surgical area regenerates – this takes time.

Let your body have the time it needs, rest well and remember that liposuction to treat lipedema is not a minor procedure. Do you have any more questions? We are happy to give you the support and advice you need. Call us or write us an email.
